Artist’s Description: Bontle is a name of Setswana origin meaning beauty, but the term encompasses much more than physical appearance, representing all that is good. Throughout history, not all new and exciting things have emerged from civilizations. Humans create advanced designs and technologies from their own experiences, without needing to belong to a specific type of society.

The design elements are actually separate parts of three prints (zebra, seashell and doodle) overlaid and reflected in an image that depicts a traditional African mask with modern inspiration and emulates the counterproductive conversations we have as people about being true to ourselves by wearing our own mask. The design was international, but not planned. It shows that in African design the space and context will tell you how you have to behave and how you have to respond. You never have to follow the crowd, but be one with it. That’s why we do the same thing and get different results, because the idea of art in an African context is of incomparable beauty.
