Artist’s Description:

Bontle is a name of Setswana origin meaning beauty, but the term encompasses much more than physical appearance, representing all that is good. Throughout history, not all new and exciting things have emerged from civilizations. Humans create advanced designs and technologies from their own experiences, without needing to belong to a specific type of society.

The design elements are separate parts of three prints (zebra, seashell and squiggly line patterns) superimposed and mirrored, representing a traditional African mask inspired by the modern. They emulate the unproductive conversations we have about being true to ourselves by wearing our own mask. The design was conceived internationally, but not pre-emptively, demonstrating that, with African design, your space and context, along with your soul, will tell you how you should behave and respond. You should not follow the crowd, but be one with it. That’s why we do the same and get different results: the idea of art in an African context is one of unparalleled beauty.
